Andromeda and the Sea Monster Ceto. Flying along on his winged sandals, Perseus came to the North African coastline; when he reached the kingdom of Ethiopia, he found a beautiful young woman chained naked to a rock, sticking out from the sea. At the heart of the composition is Perseus, on Pegasus, flying through the sky and seizing Andromeda, who is naked and wearing her broken manacles. Around them is a glory of Cupids, celebrating the love between Perseus and Andromeda. Throughout the composition, small stars are visible.

These family connections to a great hero, and through him to Zeus, were common in Greek lore. The sprawling family of Perseus and Andromeda gave legitimacy to the lands their descendants ruled stories of their heroic deeds. Perhaps the fresco of Perseus rescuing Andromeda was meant to remind the man of the house that he should treat his wife well (come to her rescue if needs be), while the picture of Medea suggested that disaster would befall the man and his household if he scorned her. One of the most well known stories in Greek Mythology, “Andromeda and Perseus” takes the audience on a death-defying journey as Perseus must battle

Perhaps the fresco of Perseus rescuing Andromeda was meant to remind the man of the house that he should treat his wife well (come to her rescue if needs be), while the picture of Medea suggested that disaster would befall the man and his household if he scorned her. Perseus and Andromeda was one of a series of six large-scale mythological paintings commissioned from Titian by King Philip II of Spain, that were each to represent a scene from The Metamorphoses, an immensely popular epic poem by the Roman poet Ovid. Andromeda and Perseus meet and fall in love after he saves her soul from the enslavement of Thetis' "son" Calibos (a made-up character introduced to provide Perseus with a dramatic foil) and before he slays Medusa, whereas in the myth they first meet when Perseus finds Andromeda chained to the rock as he is returning home from having already slain Medusa.
